Depression
'I am very depressed. '
'Ah, this is so depressing. '
We keep on hearing these statements everyday but a very few of us know what actually this term 'depression' means.
Depression is a serious illness which affects the brain.General misconception associated with depression is - it is similar to sadness. It is not an illness which only involves sadness, but it is more than that.
Life is all about ups and downs. But there are cetain traumatic moments, which leaves the person deranged. It not only affects him/her mentally, but also physically. But these events are not only the factors responsible for depression.
Genetic characteristics, hormonal changes are also responsible for it. How would you feel if you are very confident about doing something and in the very next second, that confidence fades away? How would you feel if you are happy at one moment and you feel sad at the very next moment, for no reason?
How would you feel if you lose interest in your family and friends, even if you want to be a part of them? These are some notions which direct the life of a depressed person.
Its very easy to say that, "Its all in the head. Stop thinking about it."But when a person himself/herself goes through this phase of illness, he/she gets to know what this demon is capable of doing.First let's make one thing clear, not all mental illnesses mean that the person is insane. The same goes with depression. So, one should stop calling a depressed person -mad. It is better to get diagnosed as early as possible because it requires medication. But anti-depressant is not only the treatment for depression. Its not that you are feeling low today, by taking an anti-depressant, you will feel high tomorrow. Depression can last for weeks, months, or even years. So, along with the prescribed medicines, therapy is considered for treatment.
The rate of depressed people committing suicide is high. It is necessary for family and friends to understand that no longer a person's mind is in his/her control. He/she might cry, scream, complain, all at the same time because he/she can no longer control it. So, love, care and support is needed. It is necessary for us to understand that talking about it is better than shying away. A person with mental illness does not want extra attention. What he/she wants is equality -equality in all spheres of life. Don't treat them like they are ill or different from others, and require extra attention. They don't need it. Treat them equally because depression does not discriminate. It can happen to you as well. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere.
